- Sustainable development is acknowledged as a strategic objective for projects and has been classified as a global initiative for ihe construction industry. Although the benefits of sustainable development appear obvious, the various definitions being used by industry indicate a vague or confused understanding of it. Global initiatives demand unified definitions and an important step in achieving this is the development of indicators to assess and measure sustainable development. Traditionally, sustainability indicators are based on environmental performance only. However, the picture is incomplete without considering socio-economic factors and the changes they create. These changes could be better understood by using an historical study of the 'sustainable fit' of existing built environments in socio-economic systems. Validity of the study would rely on a framework of environmental, social and economic indicators that analyse their complex cause and effect relationship. This paper describes frameworks for sustainable development indicators and measurement with the aim of moving industry closer to an understanding of sustainability.
